Many personal changes marked 2005 for me and right around that time I painted this watercolor. I actually drew the pen & ink parts in first and then decided I wanted to finish it off with watercolor. The matting is cream colored with brown.

I actually painted this watercolor in 2004 before we moved to New Mexico (we moved here in 2006) and because it has special meaning for me I do want to keep this one for myself.  When I have it matted and framed I will put a newer picture up.

Thought I'd try a little something new and painted this acrylic on 9x12  cardboard panel New Year's Day & evening adding the pen & ink finishing touches this morning.  I hope with this New Year of 2011 I can also paint more, blog more and live life to the very fullest as none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.  New Mexico is full of beauty, color and inspiring things & I just want to continue to explore & discover new pieces of creativity within myself.  Happy 2011 everyone!!!

Burgundy Colored Matt - Unframed 11"x14" Floral - Acrylic & Watercolor on Watercolor Paper - October 2010

 The first picture shows the floral painting mounted temporarily on gesso board and the flowers to the right are the actual flowers I used to sketch & paint the painting.  The second picture is the floral painting with burgundy matting (unframed).  The third picture is a closer up picture of the actual flowers.

Closer Look at Detail of Sketching on Flowers

  I sketched this the other day when I was doing some plein aire painting in the backyard from some flowers I'd planted in our garden.  Last night I decided to make the background a hand mixed brown acrylic and my intention is to fill in the floral detail with watercolor.

I thought I'd try something a little different and just began drawing with this.  I like to draw and paint using different mediums and this is definitely different than what I'm used to but I also thought I'd  reverse the order in darker to lighter colors I would normally do the sky.  It reminded me of The Bosque here in New Mexico and got me out of my "comfort zone" a little bit too.  I had fun doing it and really like the colors tho oil painting is my first love.

I thought that rather than do an oil painting in the house I might use acrylics and try a looser approach with my brushstrokes.  I've always wanted to learn to paint in a more free flowing maybe impressionistic way. I also thought I'd try combining the vision from my mind with highlighting colors and see what effect I would get.

When I took instruction with A. Goodman and we left our work in progress at her studio I would start painting another at home so that whatever instruction I was getting I could apply to another painting, helping me retain the information better.  After the David Mayer "Enchanted Landscapes" workshop I thought I'd do another painting using some of those techniques tho the subject was strictly from my head (not a photo).

Not For Sale - My First Landscape Painting - 1997

My First Landscape Painting

This was the first landscape painting I did under the instruction and guidance of A. Goodman of Beaumont, CA.  She studied with Leon Franks, had painted at The Louvre and was a wonderful guide and mentor as well as becoming a good friend, she told me that at one time she and her husband owned Orange County Publishing in California.  She and her husband (whose pen name is Lee Martin) produced many lapidary (jewelry) making videos as well as cookbooks, dollmaking, knitting, fine china paintings, oil paintings, novels, did freelance writing and were on the staff of Rock and Gem Magazine.  Her classes, tho small with only about six to eight students, were highly anticipated each day as our breaks were filled with the culinary treasures Ms. Goodman treated us to.  We studied landscapes, seascapes, still life, and some snow scenes over a period of about eight months going from class studies to individual lessons.  I will be forever grateful to Ms. Goodman, she gifted me with my first French Easel that had been given to her by her husband, Marty, wouldn't take anything for it and only asked that "when you become famous you mention I gave you your first easel".
